Frequently Asked Questions
How does a dietitian help with prediabetes?
Registered dietitians help people with prediabetes build eating habits that support healthy blood sugar, such as balanced meals, steady meal timing, understanding nutrition labels, and recommending supplements as appropriate. In the Diabetes Prevention Program, a large NIH-funded study, people with prediabetes who made structured lifestyle changes lowered their risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 58% over about three years compared with placebo.
What blood test numbers mean prediabetes?
According to the American Diabetes Association, prediabetes is an A1C of 5.7% to 6.4%, a fasting blood glucose of 100 to 125 mg/dL, or a 2-hour oral glucose tolerance test result of 140 to 199 mg/dL. Your doctor makes the diagnosis; we help you understand your results and decide what to work on. We also look at other labs involved in your metabolic health to understand your bigger health picture, such as blood cholesterol, triglycerides, and liver enzymes.
Do I need a referral to see a dietitian for prediabetes?
No. You can book directly without a referral since we are not in-network with insurance. If you are using HSA/FSA funds, or you would like to submit a superbly to your insurance for reimbursement, you should check with your benefits provider first to see if you need any documentation from your doctor.
How many visits will I need?
The genuine answer is “it depends”. Most clients work with us for several months, with follow-up visits spaced to fit their progress and budget. Generally we recommend to retest your A1c to assess your progress no sooner than 3 months after making consistent nutrition, exercise, and lifestyle changes. This is because the lifespan of a red blood cell is about 3 months, and so changes will not be reflected sooner.
Do I have to give up carbs or sugar to manage prediabetes?
No. Carbohydrates can be part of a healthy eating pattern with prediabetes. We focus on the type and amount of carbohydrate, pairing it with protein, fiber and healthy fat, and building meals you enjoy rather than cutting out whole food groups. It is a pervasive myth that carbs or sugar inherently cause prediabetes/diabetes, and we will help you to understand the science and biology of your body and nutrition.
How many patients with prediabetes have you worked with?
We have worked with hundreds of patients to successfully lower and stabilize their A1c. The most successful patients are those who understand that managing prediabetes requires committing to lifestyle changes, not fad diets or quick fixes. That’s why our counseling focuses on helping you to figure out realistic, sustainable strategies that can stick for life.
Do I have to weigh myself or lose weight?
Weight loss is not the correct intervention for everyone to manage prediabetes. We will make an assessment on the suspected cause of your prediabetes and will discuss all strategies for management, many of which can be unrelated to weight loss. We take a patient-centered approach to care, meaning that you choose what interventions you would like to pursue. Additionally, our team is sensitive to concerns about weight, body image, and disordered eating, and you are never expected to weigh yourself if it is an undesirable experience.
