What To Expect

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I see a dietitian while taking a GLP-1 medication such as Ozempic, Wegovy or Zepbound?

Yes, it's recommended. A 2025 joint advisory from four leading obesity and nutrition organizations lists registered dietitian counseling as a key support for people on GLP-1 medications, because eating less makes it easier to fall short on protein, nutrients and fluids. Registered dietitians can also help manage gastrointestinal side effects, blood sugar regulation, and help you eat enough protein to reduce the risk of muscle loss. A dietitian call also help you with dietary changes if you choose to discontinue a GLP-1.

Will I lose muscle on a GLP-1?
Some of the weight lost on GLP-1 medications is lean mass which includes every part of your body weight that isn’t fat (ig ncludinmuscle, bones, organs, water, skin and connective tissue). Research indicates that direct reductions in muscle volume are generally proportional to overall weight loss and comparable to the muscle loss seen with any standard calorie-deficit diet or bariatric surgery. Eating enough protein and doing regular strength training help protect muscle, which is important not only for physical abilities, but also for a healthy metabolism and blood sugar regulation. Your dietitian can help customize a protective nutrition plan.

What happens if I stop my GLP-1 medication?

Weight regain is common. In the STEP 1 extension study, people regained about two-thirds of the weight they had lost within a year of stopping semaglutide. A dietitian can help you plan for stopping or lowering your dose so the habits you've built stay in place. People who receive support from a dietitian are more successful with keeping weight off after discontinuing a GLP-1.

Do I need a referral to see a GLP-1 dietitian?

No. You can book directly without a referral since we are not in-network with insurance. If you are using HSA/FSA funds, or you would like to submit a superbly to your insurance for reimbursement, you should check with your benefits provider first to see if you need any documentation from your doctor.

Will a dietitian prescribe a GLP-1, or change my medication or dose?

No. Dietitians don't prescribe or adjust medications. We focus on nutrition and coordinate with your prescriber when you'd like us to.

How many visits will I need?

The genuine answer is “it depends”. Most clients work with us for several months, with follow-up visits spaced to fit their progress and budget. If you are using a GLP-1 for prediabetes or diabetes, generally we recommend to retest your A1c to assess your progress no sooner than 3 months after making consistent nutrition, exercise, and lifestyle changes. This is because the lifespan of a red blood cell is about 3 months, and so changes will not be reflected sooner.

How much does it cost, and is it covered by insurance?

Your first 60-minute visit is $160, and 30-minute follow-ups are $80. MP Nutrition is out-of-network with insurance, and payment is due at your appointment. If you have out-of-network benefits, they may apply but you need to verify your coverage. We also accept HSA and FSA cards.

Can I meet with a GLP-1 dietitian virtually?

Yes. We see patients in person at 25882 Orchard Lake Rd, Farmington Hills, MI, or by secure video in most states. Please call to confirm we can see you in your state before booking.
