Frequently Asked Questions
Can a dietitian help with celiac disease?
Yes. A Registered Dietitian teaches you the gluten-free diet, helps reduce risk of accidental exposure to gluten, assesses related food intolerances, and makes sure you still get all the essential nutrients you need.
Do dietitians diagnose celiac disease?
No. Your doctor will order blood tests and biopsies. We work with your doctor to plan your diet around these findings.
Can you have celiac disease without digestive problems?
Yes. There are many other symptoms of celiac disease including unexplained iron-deficiency anemia, osteoporosis or osteopenia (low bone mass) at an unusually early age, unexplained cavities, chronic fatigue, general weakness, brain food, neurological issues including migraines and difficulty speaking, unexplained infertility and recurrent miscarriages, irregular menstrual cycles, unexplained elevated liver enzymes, and chronic skin rashes that do not get better with medication/topical treatment.
Can adults get celiac?
Yes. Celiac disease can develop at any point in life, and over 80% of cases are diagnosed in adulthood. It is thought that an underlying genetic predisposition can be activated by major physiological stressors such as viral infections, surgery, or physical trauma.
Should you take a multivitamin if you have celiac?
Dietitians frequently recommend a multivitamin for people with celiac disease, especially around the time of diagnosis or if blood tests reveal nutritional gaps. Untreated celiac disease often causes issues with nutrient absorption due to intestinal damage. Your dietitian will help you determine what supplements may be appropriate, and make safe recommendations for certified gluten-free options.
How much does celiac nutrition counseling cost, and is it covered by insurance?
Your first 60-minute visit is $160, and 30-minute follow-ups are $80. MP Nutrition is out-of-network with insurance, and payment is due at your appointment. If you have out-of-network benefits, they may apply but you need to verify your coverage. We also accept HSA and FSA cards.
